1991 Mustang Coupe swap from AOD to Borg Warner T5 hydraulic clutch notes:

F 150 E 150:
# 7 Seventh generation (1980–1986)
# 8 Eighth generation (1987–1991)
# 9 Ninth generation (1992–1996/1997)

Looks like 1988-1991 is the target for more lookin' NOT 1987 as read:

1987 design was more streamlined, and maintenance items were made simpler. Rear antilock brakes were now standard, and the first truck to boast this. The manual transmission was revised with five speeds in 1988

however;

# 1992-1996 - 5.0 L Windsor V8, FI, 185 hp (138 kW)
# 1987-1991 - Windsor 5.0 L V8, EFI, 185 hp (138 kW)
# 1988-1991 - Windsor 5.8 L V8, EFI, 210 hp (157 kW)
# 1980-1985 - 302 in³ (5.0 L) Windsor V8
# 1985-1986 - 302 in³ (5.0 L) V8, Windsor FI, 185 hp (138 kW)

My thoughts originally on my last drivable 1976 Ford Elite project was dropping in a 5 speed, using a bolt in pedal assembly from a dirt track/modified parts catalog, like some place like Speedway Motors, etc., until I found my 1972 GTS 4 speed car. You can use anything, if you make it work. I was going to take the 4 speed parts from my GTS project, but didn't have the heart to kill the Torino, so I ditched the Elite.

The frame has the holes already there for a zbar, but I imagine you can adapt a gearbanger pedal from something that takes a hydraulic clutch, and get a newer 5 richmond speed. Hell, I have a bellhousing off a 4 speed F150 from the early mid 80's that had a hydraulic slave cylinder, it was off a 300 inline 6, but I thought they shared the sbf bolt pattern. If you were trying to convert on the cheap, try to locate a F250 2wd truck that was a 351w truck, and drop in the 5 speed. Granted, it ain't going to be a toploader, but you could probably get by reasonable, and the F250 5 speed will take a fair amount of abuse if rebuilt for street duty...think about it, hell the f series is 3 tons, so I think a 2 ton torino will be ok with that trans {for a cheap swap, anyways} I know I am eyeing the richmond 5 speed, my 4 speed and my gearing, 3950rpm at 80MPH is not making the 351c happy on the highway.

===========================T5's

T-5. Actually, American Motors was the first manufacturer to use this transmission in the 1982 Spirit and Concord cars. Ford soon adopted the T-5, using this unit in the 1983 Mustangs and Thunderbirds. GM used the T-5 in the 1982 and up S/T series pickups and small Blazers, and their Astro vans. They began installing them in 1983 in the Camaros and Firebirds. Nissan also liked the idea of an internal shifter linkage five-speed, and they used this transmission in the 280ZX/300Z cars as well. Additionally, Honda and Isuzu used the T-5 in some models in the 1990s.

he T-5 used in the GM models incorporates a hydraulic clutch master on the firewall and slave attached to the bell housing to provide smoother shifting with less effort than with a conventional mechanical clutch linkage. The Ford version of the T-5 uses a shift cable attached to the clutch pedal. The cases are all-aluminum and are referred to as toploaders because the access cover for the internals is on the top of the transmission rather than on the side like some other standard transmissions.

Note: 4-cylinder Ford 2.3-liter Turbo units as well as 1993-96 Cobra "Z-Spec" T-5s do not interchange directly, due to a difference in the input shaft bearings.

The T-5 bellhousing need holes drilled to mount the SC slave/TO, plus another pass-through hole for the hydraulic line. Here we see R&E fabricated a new input shaft bearing from alunimum stock. The TO bearing will bolt to the holes drilled and tapped at the 2 and 8 o'clock positions.

Now the hydraulic throwout bearing is To accommodate the hydraulic fittings, two bolted to the fabricated bearing retainer. holes are drilled in the aluminum bellhousing. The slave/TO bearing mounts approximately 3/4 of an ince closer to the clutch than an SC's.

T5 5 Speed:

This transmission is 15-1/8" long (with a 7" bellhousing). This transmission was used in Mustangs until 1995. When purchasing a T5 transmission or bellhousing from a Mustang, be aware that the 1994-95 T5 transmission input shaft is 5/8" longer than a 1984-93 transmission. The Mustang T5 clutch mechanism is cable operated, whereas the Bronco 11 / Ranger clutch mechanism is hydraulic. A new hydraulic slave cylinder will need to be obtained and fabricated to fit this bellhousing. These two kits include a new Borg Warner T5 output shaft, adapter housing and a new l7% overdrive gear. Also included is a spud shaft coupling the Borg Warner output shaft to the 25 spline transfer case, a custom adapter housing, and necessary hardware. Provisions for your stock transfer case shifter linkage have been provided on this custom housing. When installing this linkage, modifications are required.

P/N 50-1802 - T5 to Borg Warner 1350 T/C. Adapter length of 4-1/2".

P/N 50-1803 - T5 to Borg Warner 1350 T/C. Adapter length of 6-1/2".

We offer a complete transmission assembly package which includes the above kit, bellhousing and a new Tremec World Class T4/T5. The transmission that we offer has a low gear ratio of 3.95:1. This transmission comes directly from the factory as a 4 speed. The transmission kit listed below is packaged as a 4 speed application; however, we do have a 5th gear option. When ordering this transmission package and desiring a 5th gear (17% overdrive), add P/N 20-0021

P/N 27-1004 - T4 transmission assembly to Borg Warner 1350 T/C. Transmission O.A.L. of 26-3/4".

P/N 27-1005 - T4 transmission assembly to Borg Warner 1350 T/C. Transmission O.A.L. of 28-1/2".

(The bellhousing in these kits require a 157 tooth flywheel)

(A new hydraulic slave cylinder will need to be obtained and fabricated to fit this bellhousing)
