After this, I decided I had to sell the truck, as beloved I considered it, I just couldn't get it legal. I wanted to keep the engine and the propane gear because it ran so damn good, I loved it... As I bolted the block up to an engine stand, I saw a gold plaque stating it was a GM crate engine...hmm that nice but when upon removal of the oil pan: Surprise! Its a 4 bolt main!! I sold it to my dad for a nominal fee so he could use it in his 1965 carry all I found for him more on that later... Here are some pictures of the engine just when I took it out.
Dang that thing was clean; the oil, coolant were pristine, there was no sludge no build up no unpleasant surprises at all! The hone marks were clearly visible in the bores the lifter valley looked freshly scrubbed. I have no idea how many miles were on the truck and / or this power plant, but I would guess that the truck itself had far more miles than this GMC rebuild job & therefore LPG equipment. I have to wonder though: why use a plastic-toothed timing gear set? Cheap or low noise? It hardly seems a good trade for if the teeth break major damage will ensue... this is no Japanese DOHC non-interference engine after all...
So I mentioned using this engine in a 1965 Chevy
Carryall.... I found it in a storage yard my pal used to store his boat.
It was exactly to my Dad's specifications, and he bought it. He wanted
a specific non barn-doors, he wanted a tailgate, it was a bit rough, in fact it
lacted interior... pretty much completely. I got to help my dad quite a
